The Best Action Films To Stream On Netflix

Here at We Need To Talk About Cinema, we understand how frustrating it can be scrolling through Netflix for hours, trying to decide which film from the thousands of titles available you want to watch. Sometimes you end up scrolling for so long that you end up giving up altogether and watching something you've seen before or doing something else completely and, with the UK currently in lockdown due to Covid-19, there's guaranteed to be more people doing that right now more than ever. That's why we've decided to pick some of the best genre films currently available to stream on Netflix UK, and with boredom seizing many of us now more than ever, what better place to start than with action films?

Dunkirk (2017)

When it comes to action, Netflix really does have something for everyone, with a number of action thrillers, comedies, sci-fis, martial arts and action adventures. Recent hits such as Christopher Nolan’s war epic Dunkirk, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar winning turn in The Revenant and 2017’s Wonder Woman make this list along with lesser known gems such as Rian Johnson’s time bending 2012 sci-fi, Looper.

Enter the Dragon (1973)

There’s also a variety of well loved classics, with Ocean’s 11, The Equaliser, Robert Clouse’s Bruce Lee starring Enter The Dragon and one of my personal all time favourites, The Terminator. The recently released Extraction starring Chris Hemsworth makes the cut for its well executed action sequences, but our top pick has to go to Chad Stahelski’s latest John Wick instalment; John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

Though this is easily the most fast paced of the John Wick films so far (the two hour and ten minutes run time feels more like half of that), the plot is still plentiful, with Keanu Reeves’ ridiculously likeable titular hitman constantly coming up against his money hungry colleagues and the powers that be. With the gorgeous cinematography complementing the flawlessly executed action sequences throughout this film and dashes of humour sprinkled in at just the right times, Parabellum makes for an artful watch as well as a greatly thrilling and entertaining one.

If you’re yet to see the first two films but still fancy giving this one a watch, don’t worry too much about not understanding the storyline- the first time I saw this film was without having any prior John Wick knowledge and I still managed to follow along with great enjoyment (though the first two films are definitely worth checking out if you want to watch them before or after-hand). We’re told everything we need to know from the very start- John Wick has been made excommunicado and now every assassin in New York City is after him.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

Director Chad Stahelski recently joked about waking up in cold sweats with the knowledge that he somehow has to top the third film in an interview with Collider, and when you see the magnitude of Chapter 3, it’s not hard to see why. The film maker now has longer than previously anticipated to figure it out though, with Chapter 4 being delayed until May 2022 due to Covid-19 but, until then, there’s plenty for viewers to enjoy within the first three.
